Happy Earth Day 2007!
WELLS, B.C. – The beautiful hamlet of Wells, BC is about to get a bit greener. On April 21st, International Earth Day, the Wells Community Garden was officially inaugurated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, despite lingering snow. The process began last autumn, when a group of residents met to discuss their mutual interests in productive gardening, and their concerns about food safety and ecological sustainability.
Community interest is high, with ten participants this first year. The District of Wells has been very supportive, and has given the group permission to use a large, central lot as the Community Garden site. Local contributors include West Fraser Mills, who are supplying all the lumber needed to build the various structures that will comprise the garden. These include a dry compost heap, a tool shed, cold frames, deep planting beds and eventually, a green house.
The group has received much support from the community, however, donations are always welcome. The Community Garden group is seeking good topsoil, seasoned manure, wood-framed windows, garden tools and logs. Anyone interested in donating items to the Wells Community Garden can e-mail wellsgarden@hotmail.com.
